Hey Rad give me your throwing schedule

By: Randy Dykstra
Add to Mixx!

Got to give me chance to get thru #2 and #3.... I've been gone 5 days so lots to read and reply to...

I've got 2 answers for you.... 1st is program that my son and I do or at least attempt to do... School work, sickness, and (rain ...once in a while) interrupts this.... Of course we work very hard and more than most people my son's age. (we because I throw as much as he does just not with same velocity)
We throw Year round! Sept-Nov are Fall season. but we treat them as heavy training time along with dec. Jan Feb are considered a peaking time....AAU qualifers early Feb in So Cal. Now we are going back into a training mode but we still are playing games (think late spring training) Our next REAL goal is to be in top form for Nationals in late July so March/April not as important as to rec leagues... We start all over on labor day.....

Offseason min 3 sessions....One specifically long toss (after warming 40 or 50), another is weighted balls Over/under loading (warmup 25 30 throws) then 5-10 pitches to warm up then 20 pitches with 6 or 7 oz ball, then 20 pitches with 3.5 oz ball, then 20 pitches with normal ball, third session is bullpen working on control...hitting spots (60 -75 pitches), We alternate with hitting work outs.... Circumstances usually prevent one workout per week.
Peaking we will cut back long toss and weighted throwing and replace with one bullpen...

Now, during season we currently have two game days Sat and Sun and two team practices Wed and friday (friday is just batting cages which we do on our own) Team practice is warm up and mainly fielding work and/or live BP. We also do a bullpen and one other Cage session each week.... again we average one of these each week is pre-empted...(sometimes we adjust to work any problem areas, taking extra fielding instead of cage work etc...) Daylight Savings and we will have 3 game days. we will still try ot get one bullpen in or use game as bullpen.
Only time My son had a sore arm was afterfirst game in the year where coach left him in for 83 Pitches.... next week I helped coach pull my son after 57 pitches.... we will build from about 50 pitches per game now to about 80 or 90 in July... He can usually average 12-15 Ps per inning....

Now team, This year it is rec league 8 to 10 yos (younger son).... we practice 3 times a week - (preseason) Warm up throwing as everyone arrives ( I hate late arrivers but I haven't found a way to prevent it in rec ball)(travel ball everyone arrives on time...period) then instruction period, working on form and mechanics...(even after 3 to 4 years of BB most of these kids don't know how to throw) Then other drills... usually requires throwing... One practice is in my batting cage so we really only throw twice a week, except I have top 4-6 Pitchers come for a 20-30 minute bullpen one on one with me in addition to team practices. I would add a practice for older aged rec leagues

[Yeah my social life and everything outside of work, sleep and sometimes eating is on a BB field....]

Now, anyone who played HS sports can rememeber Hell Week(s). The very first week of practice where the coach really worked you hard. It was the second week that was hell because your muscles just ached!!! It usually lasted about 2 weeks for your muscles to recover and then they started building for the season. That's the way I learned.. Sore arms are to be expected right now and I beleive working through it is the best way to remedy the soreness... Soreness is not injury but it is difficult to teach kids to distinguish the difference...
