Notes for Practice Holding Runners for Pitchers

Four Bear Notes for RHP & LHP Pitchers:
RHP Note 1. Work Fast Note 2. Throw Strikes early in count Note 3. Disrupt the timing of each hitter Note 4. Disrupt the timing of each baserunner LHP Add Note 5. Shut the running game down. Overall: For RHP, both catchers and 1b (and coaches relaying throw over) may provide some information to pitcher to throw over). At times the catcher provides better information than the 1b, however the pitcher is the better of the personnel to hold baserunners, period. For LHP, pick off moves to first base are best NOT called by the catcher. If the catcher knows what he is doing, he is NOT the best one to call it. The LHP is. Period. For practice, Single L, try to start devoting 15-20 minute every other workout to holding runners. The objective is to obtain the timing necessary to execute the following situations. (As a secondary objectives, take advantage of the practice time and work on team coaching and baserunning. The situations: a) 1b holding runner on 1b, b) 1b playing behind the runner at 1b. Several of LHP moves throwing over. RHP simply turn and throw over. Catcher throwing down to 1b (to 2b men). c) MInf checking runner at 2b. Pitcher inside move to 2b (to 2b/SS) Pitcher outside move to 2b (to 2b/SS). Catcher throwing down (to 2b/SS). d) 3b keeping runner at 3b in check. e) First and third situations.
